August’s Young Rail Professional of the Month

Each month we will be introducing you to a Young Rail Professional, this month we meet Wendy! As well as being the National & East Midlands IntoRail Manager for Young Rail Professionals, Wendy is also an Assistant Project Engineer at Bombardier Transportation.

Name:Wendy Hahlani

Interesting fact about you: I used to play the position of hooker in a rugby team

Current Job Title & Employer: Assistant Project Engineer at Bombardier Transportation

Length of time in the Rail industry: 1 year 6.5 months

How did you get into the rail industry: Complete accident; I had just graduated and was looking for a job in an industry that I could make a difference to the world (as you do when you are an idealistic graduate). I didn’t know much about the rail industry (by much I mean i knew nothing at all about the industry). A friend of mine posted that the company he was working for (Bombardier) was hiring and that there were some exciting opportunities available. I read a little about the company, the industry and about what the job being advertised would entail then applied straight away! It seemed like an industry with a diverse range of possibilities and I have not looked back since.

What attracted you to the rail industry?: The diversity of roles from on board to wayside to rolling stock.

What’s your favourite part of your job?: Being able to do a bit of everything from systems engineering to balise programming (& the travel is nice too).

What’s your favourite thing about being a member of young rail professionals?Being able to meet other young (in experience) members and share stories, free pizza while learning at development events and the new tours being organised.
