We are the Professional Association for Young People in the Railway Industry

Young Rail Professionals (YRP) was founded in 2009 to promote, inspire and develop the next generation of railway talent. YRP brings together people from all aspects of the industry, whether they are involved in engineering, asset management, train operations, strategic planning, maintenance, franchising, regulation, marketing or human relations. YRP is open to any young rail professional.

To enhance and inspire our members, YRP delivers Networking and Professional Development opportunities including technical seminars, presentations, site visits and socials. We work closely with a number of professional institutions, running regular events with the Railway Study Association, Institute of Railway Operators and Women in Rail.  A full list of our collaborators can be found here. We also run a Rail Ambassadors programme with STEMnet, providing opportunities for our members – now totalling over 3,500 – to visit schools, colleges and universities to attract the next generation into this dynamic industry.

YRP is free to become a member (simply register on our website) and we do not charge for our professional development events. Networking events are subsidised through our corporate partners.

Young Rail Professionals is Not-for-profit Company Limited by Guarantee and is run by a committee of young volunteers from within the rail industry. Our company number is 08963662 and our registered office is Young Rail Professionals, Derby Carriage Works, Litchurch Lane, Derby, DE24 8AD.

12Our Future Vision

We will continue to focus on promoting the railway industry as a great place to grow and develop a career, on inspiring young people in rail to drive forwards through innovation and collaboration and on bringing people together through excellent networking events.

We intend to keep growing our regional YRP branches, to continue our collaborations with other institutions and to support those just starting out in the industry. We are also looking to strengthen our international relations with annual international technical visits.

Our ambition for Ambassadors is to support the creation of rail industry recruitment fairs, targeting colleges and universities and to continue to support third-party events across the UK.

We would like to strengthen the influence of young people within the industry at a strategic  level within the industry, commissioning research and providing consultation response to represent the views of our network of young people  who will become the future leaders delivering the legacy set by today’s leadership.

Railway Children – Our Chosen Charity

positive logo on black background

Young Rail Professionals are proud to partner with Railway Children to engage our members in fundraising activities to help this wonderful charity get to street children and bring hope and rescue to kids in need.  YRP will also seek to support Railway Children in key projects and promotion of their cause.

Railway Children fight for vulnerable children who live alone at risk on the streets, where they suffer abuse and exploitation. In the UK, society often denies their existence, and in other countries the problem is so prevalent that it has become ‘normal’.

They run away or are forced to leave homes where they suffer poverty, violence, abuse and neglect. They find themselves living on the streets because there is nowhere else to go and no one left to turn to. The problems they face on the streets are often even worse than those they endured at home. Every day Railway Children fight to change their story.

How can YRP members get involved with the Railway Children?

Railway Children has a programme of events from climbing the Three Peaks to jumping out of a plane, cycling from London to Paris to running a marathon. So if you want to take part in a physical challenge and do something amazing for street children, take a look at the website www.railwaychildren.org.uk/events.

Railway Children also have a network of volunteers across the country who get involved in local events, collections, etc. So whether you can only spare a couple of hours or a couple of days, contact them to get involved – hello@railwaychildren.org.uk
