Rail franchises have become a hot-topic in Great Britain in recent times due to strike action, proposed nationalisation policies and questions around foreign ownership. However, it is not always clear that there is a deep public understanding of how the rail franchise market operates, who is involved, and what drives the various market participants.

Please join us for a discussion with industry stakeholders on the rail franchise market from the perspective of train operating companies, rolling stock owners and legal advisers. Through this event, we hope to give attendees a greater understanding of what the rail franchise market entails. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear the panel speak, followed by a question and answer session.

A networking opportunity will follow this event (refreshments available). Tickets are extremely limited, so please make sure to cancel your ticket if you can no longer make the event, to free up your spot.

The following speakers are confirmed for the event:

Anthony Hyde

Bid Director, Stagecoach Rail

Anthony will introduce the decision process of a prospective bidder when deciding whether they are interested in a franchise or not, including what elements are important and what might put a bidder off?

Anthony has worked on an extensive number of bids over his years, with a wide range of experience not only in the Railway industry but across several transport sectors amongst different bidding environments both in the UK and abroad. He is currently working for Stagecoach Rail in the UK, leading a section of the business development team.

Darren Fodey

Senior Associate, Stephenson Harwood

Darren will provide an overview of the current rail franchise market in Great Britain, including key franchises, key industry participants and the current franchise timetable.

Darren has worked in the railway industry throughout his career and has been involved in various key projects, such as Crossrail, London Overground, High Speed 1 and the first “deep Alliance” between Network Rail and South West Trains, as well as numerous franchise and concession bids. As a result, he has significant expertise and a real understanding of how the industry operates and how rail businesses operate, having also spent time in-house in rail businesses. He has advised owning groups on multiple franchise bids as well and incumbent franchisees on all aspects of the day-to-day operation of their franchise. He also regularly contributes to articles in the rail press and has recently been a guest columnist in RAIL magazine, writing on proposals for a Rail Ombudsman.

Shazna Choudhry

Bid Project Manager, Eversholt Rail

Shaznas’ current role involves coordination of all refranchising and new build activity for the business, to which she will provide an insight.

Shazna has worked for Eversholt Rail for over 12 years. She has had numerous roles in the business and worked in various departments. While working for Eversholt Rail, Shazna undertook a degree course in Business studies, in which she achieved a first-class honours degree. She is both PRINCE2 and APMP qualified. Shazna has worked in bidding for over 4 years and has been part of winning bids for new trains on the Great Western, Northern and TPE franchises.

Charlie Marshall

Account Manager, Eversholt Rail

Charlie will offer a ROSCO perspective on refranchising and provide insight into typical bidders’ requirements during the competition stage and following the franchise award.

Charlie’s railway knowledge has been solely built up at Eversholt Rail since he joined in early 2016. His career as an account manager at Eversholt Rail has given him exposure to a variety of stakeholders including those from TOCs and Manufacturers, and has provided him with the opportunity to work as a member of the company’s internal bid team on refranchising.
