Join us for an epic Friday summer jaunt from Llandaff through Pontcanna, with the option to continue into Cardiff city centre as the night draws in. Expect a mix of good pub gardens, with food options available, short walking distances, and plenty of chances to join or depart the event along the way. There is an option to meet at Danescourt station before walking 12 minutes to the first venue, The Heathcock (CF5 2EN), before we make our way towards another four venues before the evening is out! The route follows the A4119 (Cardiff Road / Catherdral Road) which sees frequent buses directly to the Cardiff Bus Interchange opposite Cardiff Central station, allowing easy access to transport throughout the evening. Join us with YRP Heritage for a volunteering trip at the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales. These trips offer the chance to take part in hands-on heritage work with the railway’s infrastructure and operations teams. No previous experience or PTS required, just some enthusiasm to get your hands dirty in a national park! Accommodation Accommodation will be provided in the railway’s mixed-dorm hostel at Penrhyndeudraeth, located in the Ffestiniog Railway station. This is just a 10 minute walk from the TfW station in Penrhyndeudraeth, on the scenic Cambrian Coast line with direct trains from Birmingham. Everyone’s travel plans may look different - YRP will help to coordinate public transport arrivals and group travel where possible. Itinerary Thursday afternoon - Travel to the Ffestiniog Railway. Make your own way to the hostel in Penrhyn Ffestiniog station, LL48 6RB Friday - Work on the railway. Working on the railway during the day, probably with the infrastructure team on a track renewal. Saturday - Work on the railway and social. In the evening we will go for a meal at Spooners, the railway's own pub in Porthmadog. YRP will pay for food at the social. Sunday - Work on the railway. We are hoping to have a tour or train ride on one of the days too. Monday - Working and travel home. We will work on the railway until lunch. We will then travel home in the afternoon. These weekends involve outdoor work on uneven ground and are not suitable for those with mobility issues due to site conditions. Top tip: Ask you employer if they offer volunteering leave, the Ffestiniog Railway has a registered charity. Tickets Tickets are £10, which helps cover event costs. The event will begin with a presentation from the Coventry Track Team, providing an insight into the unique properties of the Coventry Very Light Rail track system, its design, and the engineering principles behind this innovative approach to urban light rail. Following the presentation, attendees will take part in a guided site tour to review, understand, and witness first-hand the construction methods used during Very Light Rail track installation. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the latest evolution in urban light rail infrastructure as it is being delivered. Whether your interests lie in engineering, health and safety, innovation, or rail technology, this event offers valuable insight into one of the UK's most exciting transport projects. Important Information Please meet at Coventry Railway Station at 13:45 for a prompt 14:00 start.The event will conclude at approximately 17:00.All participants must provide and wear their own PPE suitable for a live construction site. Young Rail Trips returns to Berlin this September for InnoTrans 2026, the world's largest trade fair for transport technology. Held every two years, InnoTrans brings together the international rail industry across rolling stock, infrastructure, signalling, digital technology and public transport. The 2024 exhibition welcomed 2,946 exhibitors from 59 countries and 169,214 trade visitors from 128 countries. This year's exhibition also marks InnoTrans' 30th anniversary. Young Rail Professionals will be taking a group of members to Berlin from Monday 21st to Saturday 26th September for a subsidised Young Rail Trips visit. The trip will start and finish at London Stansted Airport, with a programme built around experiencing InnoTrans and meeting organisations and professionals from across the international rail industry. Exclusive YRP Career Tour The InnoTrans team will host Young Rail Professionals for an exclusive guided career tour during the exhibition. Our group will visit selected exhibitors offering career opportunities, giving members the chance to meet international rail organisations, learn more about their work and hear about the roles and career paths available across the industry. The tour is being arranged specifically for the YRP group and will form part of our wider programme at InnoTrans. Young Generation Stammtisch YRP members will also join the first Young Generation Stammtisch, introduced by InnoTrans as part of its 30th anniversary. The event will bring together young professionals aged 18 to 35 from across the international rail industry, giving our group another opportunity to meet people working in different organisations, disciplines and countries during their time at InnoTrans. About Young Rail Trips Young Rail Trips gives YRP members opportunities they would not normally be able to access on their own. Trips combine technical and industry visits with the chance to experience different railway networks alongside other early-career professionals from across the UK and Ireland. Previous international visits have included Japan, the Netherlands and Berlin for InnoTrans. Each itinerary is built around learning from operators, infrastructure managers, suppliers and other organisations and seeing how different railways approach challenges shared across the industry.
