Volunteer Maintenance Weekend - IMechE Railway Challenge
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers Railway Challenge is a national engineering competition designed to give students and early-career engineers hands-on experience in railway design, engineering and operations. Now running for over 13 years, it has become a well-established development platform for those entering the industry. The competition is expanding, with plans to increase from 14 teams to up to 30. This requires infrastructure upgrades at Stapleford Miniature Railway, including changes to track layout and capacity. This volunteer maintenance weekend supports that work. Volunteers will contribute directly to preparing the railway for future competitions while gaining practical experience in a live railway environment. What you’ll be doing Track renewal and minor realignment Ballast laying and packing General track and infrastructure maintenance Supporting works linked to capacity upgrades No prior experience is required. Full guidance, supervision and protective equipment will be provided. Volunteers must bring their own safety shoes or boots. A mandatory safety induction will take place at 09:45. Volunteers travelling by train are encouraged to meet at Melton Mowbray station at 09:29, where a car share to site will be arranged. Please bring a light lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available, with access to a kitchen including fridge and microwave. For any questions, please contact Olive Lau at olivelau@youngrailpro.com
