Dr Emma Taylor, Head of Digital Safety, RazorSecure

There is increasing awareness of the importance of cyber security for the rail industry. However, challenges still exist in a number of areas, including understanding the condition of assets, reducing design vulnerabilities and meeting contractual and regulatory requirements. Through the use of real world case studies, this talk will explore the rationale for implementation of cyber security measures in context with the broader operating environment. Opportunities for increased availability of systems through enhanced visibility and protection will be highlighted, as well the benefits provided to overall rail network availability through better and more reliable services.

The event will be followed by a panel discussion:

  • Dr Emma Taylor - Head of Digital Safety, RazorSecure
  • Dr Richard Thomas - Industrial Fellow in Data Integration and Cyber Security, Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education
  • Claire Davies MBE - Director of Group Information Security, Arriva PLC UK

Biographies:

Dr Emma Taylor

Dr Emma Taylor CEng FIMechE FSaRS is an award-winning Chartered Engineer, with more than 30 years of experience across space, energy and transport sectors. As Head of Digital Safety at RazorSecure, a rail cyber security solutions company, she is leading the integration of safety and cybersecurity requirements, with a focus on detection, monitoring and asset discovery using machine learning-based technology. Previously at RSSB, the UK’s Rail Safety and Standards Board, she led their response to the Cambrian ERTMS incident, facilitating industry engagement and understanding of complex software-based systems in response to Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) recommendations. Over her career, she has led an ISO team developing a standard to mitigate space debris, assembled safety cases for multi-billion pound UK offshore HSE regulated developments and evaluated the safety impact of changes to the rail network.

Listed as one of the Cranfield School of Management Women to Watch 2020, she is a Visiting Professor at Cranfield University and a former Chair of a Professional Engineering Institution, the Safety and Reliability Society.

Claire Davies MBE

Claire has over 30 years of experience in the field of intelligence and security.   She cut her teeth within the UK military where she enjoyed a globe-trotting career identifying, assessing, exploiting and ultimately defeating the threat to the security of assets posed by those engaged in terrorism, espionage, sabotage and subversion.  In more recent times, she leads a team of information security and data protection professionals within Arriva.  She is particularly passionate about creating momentum around increased awareness to the cyber-threat within the rail industry, mentoring new recruits into the field (so she can retire) and help to fly the flag in providing safe and trusted public transport.

Dr Richard Thomas

Dr Richard Thomas MBCS is an Industrial Fellow at the University of Birmingham, with his research focusing on railway supply chain cyber security, in particular, how products can be assured to meet the requirements of the EU Network and Information Systems Directive. A member of the Research Institute for Trustworthy Inter-connected Cyberphysical Systems (RITICS) since 2015, he carried out research into the cyber security of ERTMS train to wayside communications, proposing solutions to meet the future needs of railway signalling, including a post-quantum secure solution for key management. He has been credited with the discovery of 5 critical vulnerabilities in Industrial Control Systems, has featured on Siemens’ Hall of Thanks for his work in vulnerability discovery and disclosure and has contributed to the development of secure standards for the railway.
