From new entrants, such as apprentices and graduates, to project leads and managers (who says you have to be old to be a manager!); each and every one of our ambassadors has a unique story about their journey into and in rail. From engineering to general sciences; architecture to design; operations & services, finance, legal, retail & property, and so on; our ambassadors come from across the industry. In addition to planning our own initiatives, we work with organisations such as STEMnet, Smallpeice Trust and TeenTech to ensure railways are represented at their great events with into rail ambassadors. By volunteering as an ambassador you will:
How much time do I have to commit / how many presentations do I have to give?
into rail activities are entirely voluntary and any time you decide to give to it is completely up to you. There is no remit to complete a certain number of activities in a year. If an activity is confirmed in your area, you will be contacted by your regional representative and then have the choice to volunteer if you have the time. Are travel expenses reimbursed?
Travel expenses can be reimbursed through Young Rail Professionals (YRP) if the journey you have to take to the presentation is outside of your normal commute zone. What time of day am I required to volunteer?
This will depend on the event or request from a school. Once a date and time has been confirmed, volunteers will be contacted to see who is available to present. There is no pressure in this regard to commit unless you are available. I’ve never worked with students before and don’t know what to expect…
Activities can be arranged with at least two ambassadors as this also helps provide a broader overview of the rail industry. into rail will also aim to provide workshops and guidance sessions when and where this is required. Accelerate your career by joining the YRP committee YRP is run by passionate volunteers, based across the country and we always welcome additional support. Each region has its own committee that meets monthly to plan events within the region. We also have a national executive committee providing support to all of our regions leading the future of YRP. You can help shape the future of YRP - all of our initiatives started from great ideas and passion of young people such as Rail Week launched in 2016, Heritage Engagement launched in 2017, and Young Rail Tours launched in 2019. There are many reasons why you might want to join a committee:
Whatever your reasons you’re sure to find a space to explore your interests in the YRP committee. Taking on a different responsibility to that which you find in your day-job is a great way to broaden your skills. We particularly welcome broader skills to join the YRP committee such as in accounting, marketing, PR & comms, and legal.
Whatever your background you are welcome to put yourself forward for any role on the committee. All of our committee members are expected to conduct themselves in way that supports YRP's objectives. Reach out to the Chairperson of your YRP Region if you’re interested, or join the YRP Committee group on Social Link and say hello or Contact Us. ![]() |
