Felix Schmid was born in Switzerland and studied electrical and electronic engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. He worked for two years as a software analyst and then moved to Great Britain, where he joined GEC Traction. He changed into academia after 3.5 years as a locomotive designer. He then worked at UMIST, the University of Salford, Brunel University, the University of Sheffield and the University of Birmingham. At Sheffield and Birmingham he led the development of the MSc programmes in railway systems. Felix will discuss the role of universities in supporting the railway industry. He will provide information about the UK Rail Research Information Network and some case studies of projects. He will also talk about education for the railway industry.
