About the conference

The conference on neurodiversity in rail is set to raise awareness of the employment gap in the UK rail sector for those from a neurodiverse background with a specific focus on autism. Working with organisations like the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR), the conference hopes to shed light on the needs of autistic individuals in rail, bridging the gap between the employee and employer and broadening the employment niche for organisations in the railway sector. The conference will explore recruitment processes, the role of managers and employee perspectives from a neurodiverse background.

Dates and locations

The conference will begin on the afternoon of Thursday 13 July 2023, at the University of Birmingham campus and continue on Friday 14 July 2023, at The Exchange in Birmingham’s Centenary Square, the new event space of the University.

Thursday 13 July

Will be about getting to know each other and about acquainting ourselves with the different manifestations of neurodiversity. Conversations will continue during a seminar dinner. We shall also start to explore its relevance to the rail industry in Great Britain and elsewhere. Details on timings and speakers to be shared soon.

Friday 14 July 2023

Will focus on learning more about neurodiversity characteristics that result in strengths and weaknesses in the workplace, how the industry can benefit from employing neurodiverse people and how it can create an inclusive environment.
