YRP London & South East and Western regions jointly present a visit to the Freightliner Southampton Maritime Terminal!
Freightliner welcomes Young Rail Professionals to join us on a site tour and biodiversity & sustainability awareness on the railway day, offering insight into the world of Rail Freight to show you it’s much more than just moving boxes and that there are many diverse, exciting and challenging career opportunities available in the Rail Freight world. Freightliner is also researching and adopting innovative ways to make the Railway even more sustainable than it already is by researching and investing in fuel alternatives such as Bio Fuels & Hydro-Treated Vegetable Oil, as well as raising awareness of the importance of more electrified railway lines to reduce the reliance on Diesel. Freightliner is also looking at Biodiversity and Nature Net Gain opportunities within our own depots and terminals and during this event you will get the opportunity to see how the biodiversity project at Southampton Maritime Terminal continues to bloom! Getting There
1. For participants taking the train to this event:
The closest railway station is Southampton Central, it isn’t within walking distance to the terminal so Freightliner staff will collect those travelling by train from the station and transport them to the terminal. For a lift to the terminal contact the following numbers;
Charlotte Collinson; 07812 750197
Ian Hill; 07889 203464
Please aim to arrive at the station no later than 12:15 so that lift timings can be arranged to collect as many people at once as possible without impacting on the agenda for the day. Please note that exit 2 for Southampton Central Station is currently closed for renovation works. Please use the main exit by Platform 1, you will see a Starbucks and a Costa Coffee directly across the road. Cars to transport you to the terminal will be parked in the Southbrook Road South car park located on your left as you exit the station, please refer to the map below.
2. For participants making their own way to the terminal:
What3words location; Minute.Neon.Twin
Approaching from the Dock Gate 20 entrance, take the first exit on the roundabout, and take the third turning on your left and follow the road around to the right where you will see the entrance to the Freightliner terminal gates ahead, and the car park to your right. Please reverse park in a parking bay and inform Ian Hill or Charlotte Collinson that you have arrived. Please refer to the map below.
Accessibility & PPE requirements
There is one step into the terminal office which Freightliner colleagues can assist wheelchairs over. There are no other stairs. There isn’t a disabled access toilet, however the female toilet is large with a lock on the main door but the toilet itself is inside a cubicle which would be too small for a wheelchair so assistance from a carer would be required for access to the toilet. Everything else is on one level and is wheelchair accessible as we will be sticking to designated walking routes.
PPE will be provided on the day. Participants are welcome to bring their own PPE if they prefer, the PPE requirements are; - Orange High Visibility vest or coat weather dependent
- Safety Glasses
- Hard hat
- Sensible, comfortable and flat shoes. No open toe shoes or high heels
