Into Rail delivers fun, engaging and interactive learning experiences designed to inspire young people and the wider public to explore the exciting and diverse career
opportunities within the rail industry.
Our outreach spans public STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) events, university and apprenticeship fairs, school engagement sessions and large-scale community activities. Through each event, we aim to create meaningful interactions that help people understand the broad range of roles and pathways the rail sector offers.
In addition to our own events, we partner with external organisations to visit schools, enabling direct engagement with pupils in the classroom. These sessions give students the opportunity to ask questions, explore their interests and gain a clearer understanding of what a future in rail, or wider STEM careers can look like.
A key strength of the Into Rail programme is the diversity of expertise within the Young Rail Professionals community. Our volunteers work across the full spectrum of the rail industry - including Engineering, Operations, Finance, Law, Commercial, Planning, Rolling Stock, Signalling, Track, Software, Design, Construction, Recruitment and more. We leverage this breadth of experience to provide students with informative, relatable and realistic insights into careers they may never have considered.
Volunteers share first-hand experiences, including:
⢠what their day-to-day work looks like
⢠the different education routes and training options that led them into rail
⢠how careers can grow and develop over time
⢠the wide variety of roles that exist beyond what people typically imagine
These real stories help young people see the industry as accessible, dynamic and full of opportunities across both STEM and non-STEM fields.
Supported by our industry partners, Into Rail delivers flexible, engaging and age-
appropriate activities that can be adapted for classrooms, fairs and public settings. Our aim is to leave every attendee - whether a school pupil, university student, job seeker or member of the public - with a clearer sense of the possibilities within the rail sector.
If your school or organisation would like our volunteers to visit, speak or deliver an
engagement session, we would be delighted to support you.
